Bhima broke the established rule of engagement and killed Duryodhan. Yudhisthir was upset at it as he knew that Gandhari, Duryodhan’s mother, would curse Pandavas for killing her son. Lord Krishna was once again there to help out Pandavas. With Yudhisthir’s request, Krishna headed to Hastinapur.

Upon his arrival in the capital (Hastinapur), Krishna met Sage Vyasa, who incidentally reached there before Krishna. Krishna then offered his salutations to King Dhritarastra and touched Gandhari’s feet. Krishna consoled them by his kindly words. Before Gandhari could display his anger or say anything, Krishna took the charge and told her that her curse could annihilate Pandavas. Krishna advised Gandhari to think over what happened before doing anything in rush. In his soothing words, Krishna made them realize that the outcome of the war was nothing but consequence of their actions. Krishna’s words did its magic. Had Krishna not pacified Gandhari with his tact, Pandavas would have found themselves at the receiving end.

દુર્યોધનના સ્વર્ગવાસ પછી શ્રીકૃષ્ણે હસ્તિનાપુરમાં ગાંધારી પાસે જવાનું શા માટે પસંદ કર્યું તે પણ જાણવા જેવું છે.

ભીમસેને મહાબળવાન દુર્યોધનને ગદાયુદ્ધના નિયમનો ભંગ કરીને મારી નાખ્યો તે જોઇને યુધિષ્ઠિર ખૂબ ભયભીત થયા. તેથી તેમણે વિચાર કર્યો કે મહાભાગ્યશાળી ગાંધારી મહાતપસ્વિની છે અને પોતાના તપના પ્રભાવથી ત્રણે લોકને પણ બાળી નાખવા સમર્થ છે. ક્રોધથી બળી રહેલી ગાંધારીને જો પ્રથમથી જ શાંત પાડવામાં આવે તો ઠીક થાય. અમે તેના પુત્રનો અન્યાયથી વધ કર્યો છે એ વાતને સાંભળીને એ જો ક્રોધાયમાન થઇ જશે તો પોતાના માનસિક અગ્નિથી અમને બાળીને ભસ્મ કરી નાખશે.

એવો વિચાર કરીને ગાંધારીને શાંત પાડવા માટે યુધિષ્ઠિરે શ્રીકૃષ્ણને હસ્તિનાપુર મોકલ્યા.

શ્રીકૃષ્ણ રથમાં બેસીને હસ્તિનાપુર તરફ ચાલી નીકળ્યા.

ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રને પ્રથમથી જ ખબર આપીને શ્રીકૃષ્ણ રાજમહેલ પાસે રથ પરથી નીચે ઊતર્યા, અને લેશ પણ ગભરાયા વિના ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રના મહેલમાં પ્રવેશ્યા. ત્યાં તેમની પહેલાં જ મહર્ષિ વેદવ્યાસ આવી પહોંચેલા. શ્રીકૃષ્ણે તેમનાં પ્રથમ દર્શન કરીને તેમનો તથા ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રનો ચરણસ્પર્શ કર્યો, અને વ્યગ્ર થયા વિના ગાંધારીને પણ વંદન કર્યા.

એમણે દુર્યોધનનો શોક પ્રદર્શાવીને ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રને તથા ગાંધારીને આશ્વાસન આપ્યું, અને કહ્યું કે તમારા કથનને માન્યું હોત તો દુર્યોધન દુઃખી થાત નહીં. હવે તો જે થયું તે ખરું. તમારા તપનું બળ એટલું બધું છે કે તમે માત્ર ક્રોધથી પ્રદીપ્ત થયેલાં નેત્રોથી સચરાચર પૃથ્વીને ક્ષણવારમાં બાળી નાખવા સમર્થ છો. તો પણ પાંડવોના નાશનો વિચાર ના કરશો.

શ્રીકૃષ્ણના શબ્દોને સાંભળીને ગાંધારીને સાંત્વન સાપડ્યું. એનો ક્રોધ શાંત થયો.

ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણના સંમોહનમય વ્યક્તિત્વનો પરિચય એ પ્રસંગ પરથી પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે. એમણે જો શાંતિપૂર્વક શબ્દોથી ગાંધારીને ના સમજાવી હોત તો એ પાંડવોનો ક્રોધાતુર થઇને સર્વનાશ કરી નાખત. પરન્તુ શ્રીકૃષ્ણે પાંડવોને ઉગારી લીધા, એ એમની પાંડવો પ્રત્યેની અસાધારણ અનુકંપા હતી.
